Ah, the weekend. Summer break. Christmas break. It seems that we spend the entire year waiting so that we can have a break from school, work, and all of our other daily activities. With everything going on in our busy lives, we all want the opportunity to stay home and get everything done around the house, but most importantly, we want to do absolutely nothing.
But what happens when we’re forced to stay home?
The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has effectively turned our world upside down. Ever since the virus broke out in Wuhan, China in late 2019, it spread all across the world, leaving thousands sick and billions forced to stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. Since this virus has never been seen in humans before, nor are there any vaccines or antiviral medications for it, no one really knows what the immediate future holds. And since the virus is highly contagious, we’ve all been forced to stay home from work, school, and even visiting our family and friends.
After the Armenian government declared a state of emergency and the State of Emergency Command ordered that people may only leave the house with identification and a paper stating the reason why we left, many people found themselves utterly bored. As someone who works remotely, this “new” way of living isn’t all that new. But understandably, all of us want to go to work, enjoy the beautiful spring weather, celebrate Easter, meet our friends at coffee shops, and more.
Here are some of my best tips for not going crazy when you’re forced to stay home.
- Make a list of all the things you want to get done. There are certainly lots of things that you’ve been putting off doing because of how busy you were with work and school. Whether it be cleaning the windows, organizing the drawers, painting that wall, or fixing the light, there’s definitely something that you’ve been putting off. There’s no better time than now to get that done. Now is a great time to sit down, make a list, and get all those things done as the state-mandated quarantine continues.
- Spend some time alone. If you live with other people, a part of you is probably feeling like you’re about to go crazy. This is why it’s important to spend a little bit of time alone if you can.
- Take breaks. This is especially true if you’re working from home or if your classes are now online. Those of us who work from home tend to forget about ourselves and we focus a lot on our work. But it’s important to also make sure that you take a few breaks in between your online work. A good guideline is a 15-minute break for every hour of work.
- Give a loved one a call. Even though we can’t go out and see people, there’s nothing that says we can’t call them. Now is a great time to FaceTime or Skype your loved ones and friends who live far away (or right down the street) to keep in touch.
- Get plenty of sleep. We probably don’t get much sleep during the rest of the year. Most people suffer from sleep deprivation. But now is a good time to try and fix your sleep schedule (if you have little ones, this is more difficult). Set a time each night that you would like to get to sleep and wake up at the same time every morning. Adults should be getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
- Set up a routine. One of the best ways to stay sane right now is by establishing a daily routine. Throughout the year, we all have a routine: get to work/school by this time, have lunch at this time, and so on. But now that we’re all home, it all seems so chaotic. Establish a daily routine so that you can still feel a bit more lively.
- Get some fresh air. You still are able to sit on your balcony or take a brisk walk. Getting some fresh air will help to keep your mind sharp and you’ll be feeling much better.
These are just a few of the things I’ve been doing to keep myself busy throughout this quarantine. If we all stay home, we will surely be able to return to our regular lives as soon as possible. Stay safe!
