Five Differences Between NYC and Yerevan: Metro System

The differences between NYC’s subway system and the Yerevan metro are vast. Being a former New Yorker, I don’t even know where to start! I guess I’ll begin with the schedule itself.

The Yerevan metro may not run 24/7, but from morning to night trains run consistently every five minutes, every day of the week. Being a former New Yorker, I can attest to waiting 30 minutes during rush hour for my train, and 90 minutes at night. When it comes to reliability, Yerevan wins.

Cleanliness is not in the vocabulary of the NYC subway system; each station you smell urine, or if you’re lucky you can even witness the act of it being created! You cannot find even a single candy wrapper on the platforms in Yerevan, they’re as clean as museums.

Speaking of museums, the architecture of an NYC subway platform conjures feelings of paranoia, depression, and claustrophobia. The Yerevan metro is adorned with majestic arches, carvings of historically significant persons and events; they’re gorgeous. Again, Yerevan wins.

At present one needs to buy a MetroCard which costs $1 and then you add rides, which cost $2.75, for a total of $3.75 for your first ride. Yerevan ride tokens cost $0.21. Hmm, which is more affordable?

One needs to never worry about overcrowded Yerevan rides, whereas rush hour in NYC is nauseating and infuriating. Also, the behavior of NYC commuters is often be reprehensible, such as pregnant women standing while young men hold onto their seats.
Each and every time, Yerevan wins!
