Armenia's hospitality, deeply rooted in our cultural fabric, extends its warm embrace far beyond the bustling streets of Yerevan. In the regions outside the capital, the true essence of Armenian warmth and generosity comes alive. This spirit is beautifully echoed by repatriates like Gayane Khachatryan and Sisian Boghossian, whose return to Armenia has enriched the hospitality industry with their unique perspectives and experiences.

 

Gayane Khachatryan, who repatriated from Sydney, Australia,  is the founder and operator of Balkonum Luxury Guest House in the historical village of Gosh, bringing a touch of luxury to the Armenian countryside. “Introducing a luxury guest house was a new concept for local travelers,” she shares. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Tavush Region, her establishment is a beacon of elegance and comfort, offering guests an unprecedented country house experience. “The quality and design orientation of our guesthouse often surprises our guests,” Gayane adds, underscoring her dedication to excellence.

 

Sisian Boghossian, another repatriate who now heads Armenia’s State Tourism Committee, offers an insightful overview of the sector’s growth. “2023 has been a landmark year for Armenia's tourism, marked by significant growth in tourist numbers,” she states. Sisan is proud of the record-breaking influx of over two million tourists in the first 10 months of 2023—a 22 percent increase compared to 2019. “Armenia’s appeal lies in its ancient heritage, untouched nature, rugged landscapes, warm hospitality, and rich culinary offerings—all available at an affordable price. It is an undiscovered gem with a positive vibe, providing tourists with authentic experiences off the beaten path,” she says. 

In recognition of the growing interest and potential in Armenia's hospitality sector, especially in the regions, Repat Armenia organized a ‘Meet & Greet’ event in August at the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation building in downtown Yerevan. Part of Repat Armenia's ongoing series, this event focused on "Dos and Don'ts in Hospitality in the Regions." The panel featured notable figures in the field, including Gayane and Sisian. The panel also featured other repats like Tigran Chibukhchyan (Founder and CEO of Yell Extreme Park and Director of Development of Apaga Resort) and Hasmik Movsisian (General Director of Dream of Bjni), highlighting Repat Armenia's commitment to nurturing and promoting the hospitality industry beyond the capital.

 

 

Armenian hospitality traditions, deeply ingrained in our culture, are a testament to the belief that every guest is a gift from the heavens. This ethos is particularly evident in remote towns and villages, where visitors are often welcomed into homes with open arms, treated to delicious meals, and regaled with stories rich in Armenian heritage. The generous servings of local dishes are a celebration of this spirit of generosity.
