Learning The Armenian Language in Armenia
Eligibility criteria:
- Repatriates (of at least 25% of Armenian origin) who moved to Armenia within the last two years;
- 18-55 years old.

Repatriation and Integration Center
These classes will help recent repatriates break down language barriers and improve their Eastern Armenian skills.
Free of charge, the classes will be held 3 times a week, each class lasting 1.5 hours, for a period of 2.5 months. Space is limited.
The classes will be organized in the following groups.
- Elementary Eastern Armenian: designed for those with zero to very basic knowledge of Armenian, who will learn reading, writing and speaking.
- Intermediate/Advanced Eastern Armenian: designed for those who would like to improve existing Eastern Armenian reading, writing and speaking skills.
- Western Armenian to Eastern Armenian Adaptation Class: designed for those who have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Western Armenian, but are looking to adapt their knowledge to Eastern Armenian.
In 2023 the Center has organized Armenian language courses in four stages, with approximately 250 repatriates from 30 countries participating. To secure your spot in the 2024 courses, please proceed with your application here.

Students are distributed into following groups according to the level of their Armenian language knowledge:
-Students not having knowledge in Armenian
-Students having satisfactory knowledge
-Students having excellent knowledge in Armenian
The 3rd group usually consists of Diaspora Armenians. Lessons are taken according to the above-mentioned division. The duration of studies in the Faculty is one year (1 September - 30 July), including winter holidays (one month).
How To Apply?
Foreign citizens applying for YSU should present the following documents:
-Application to the rector, where the specialization should be noted
-Copy of Diploma verified by a notary office, where the studied subjects and the marks of taken exams should be noted
-Medical document-Document on absence of AIDS
-Copy of passport
-Copy of birth certificate
-6 photos of 4x5 size
Those who wish to enter as a researcher (1-2 academic years) or as a post-graduate student to get a degree of Candidate of Sciences (3 academic years) must present the following additional documents:
-Educational plan and a brief article (annotation) on the future dissertation noting the title of the dissertation
-The list of officially verified published articles or 2-3 themes relating to the scientific thesis
-The above-mentioned documents must be verified by the Armenian Embassy of the given country and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The documents and reports are presented in Armenian, Russian or English.
Educational Program of Foreign Citizen-students
The third or fourth year students from foreign universities, who have satisfactory knowledge of Armenian, can also enter YSU for 1 academic year. They study major subjects of the faculty (8-10), as well as subjects suggested and taught in the university.
Dean of the faculty makes an individual plan for studying the given subject, which then is verified by the responsible person of the faculty and by the Vice-rector on Scientific Policy and International Cooperation. After graduation the student is given a certificate, where according to the academic hours the studied subjects are noted.
American University in Armenia

Eastern Armenian
Course description:
This course is intended for English speakers who wish to learn the modern spoken form of the Eastern Armenian language for daily use. Students will be introduced to the main characteristics of Armenian language, grammar, alphabet, stress and pronunciation. They will be able to form simple sentences, read and comprehend simple texts and hold elementary conversations. The course has been designed for a wide audience. The provided materials are designed to simplify language acquisition.
Prerequisite: No past knowledge of the Armenian language is required for this course.
Grading: Students’ performance will be evaluated based upon total points accumulated throughout the oral midterm exam, written test and final exam.
Duration: 48 hours of instruction
Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays, 18:30-20:30
Fee: 75,000 AMD

To enroll in AUA Extension courses, please go through the following steps

-Create an account by clicking New User Registration.
(If you are not a new user and already have an AUA account (having previously taken the AUA e-Math Test or applied to AUA), you should log into the account that you had created at that time. If you just registered as a new user, you will get an email asking to activate your account).
-For registering to take a course, choose the Extension tab, then Extension Applications, and apply for the course(s) you choose.
After you register online, your application will be reviewed and you will receive an email acknowledging your application.
Closer to the course start date, you will receive another email confirming your enrollment, requesting that you make payment before the course start date. The fee can be paid online via credit card or through the EasyPay terminal (located at the entrance to AUA). Alternatively, you may pay the fee via bank transfer to American University of Armenia Fund, account 001-006402-001, HSBC Bank Armenia, indicating your full name (as in the registration) and the course you are paying for.
The completed application together with the record of payment completes your enrollment.
Intermediate Eastern Armenian
Course description:
This course builds upon the knowledge and skills taught in the Elementary Eastern Armenian course. It is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of the language. The main goal of the course is to help students advance their knowledge of Eastern Armenian from the basic to the intermediate level. Students will continue to improve their speaking, writing, reading and listening comprehension skills. They will further strengthen their knowledge of Eastern Armenian with the help of various exercises, sustained monologues, compositions, social conversations and group discussions.
Prerequisite: An Armenian placement test (oral and written) is required for students who have not attended the course in Elementary Armenian.
Grading: Students’ performance will be evaluated based upon total points accumulated throughout the oral midterm exam, written test and final exam.
Duration: 48 hours of instruction

(Language classes for Birthright Volunteers only)
The language classes are only mandatory for those who are not fluent in Armenian. An in-country verbal test at the end of the participant's stay will gauge proficiency. Basic conversational fluency is a requirement for the travel fellowship. Language classes are optional for those who are fluent, however if a volunteer chooses to participate, he/she must complete at least 2 months of classes. Classes take place every Tuesday and Thursday, 2 hours per day, for a total of 4 hours per week.
Usually language classes are held at the Birthright Armenia office, however there are outdoor classes once a month. Typically the classes will consist of 2 to 4 volunteers of similar language skills. On rare occasions volunteers will have one-on-one classes. The language classes are organized specifically for Birthright participants, and are free of charge. The only payment will be for specially designed book for those who are just starting Armenian courses and will cost volunteer 5,000 drams.
Armenian Language Courses of ASPIRANTUM
Armenian School of Languages and Cultures - ASPIRANTUM offers annual summer and winter classes of Armenian language in Yerevan, Armenia. These Armenian language courses are taught by professional instructors with an extensive experience of teaching Armenian in Armenia and abroad. Armenian language classes are also followed by lectures about Armenian literature, identity and history delivered by professors of Armenian universities and academic institutions.
